“I am currently majoring in English and minoring in U.S. Latino/a Studies. Over the summer, I was given the incredible opportunity of interning with the Office of Latino Affairs of the Iowa Department of Human Rights through the USLS department.
Under the supervision of the Latino Office’s Executive Officer, Sonia Reyes-Snyder, another intern and I helped primarily with a project of profiling several Latinx business owners in the state to highlight them during Hispanic Heritage Month. In addition to that, I helped Sonia with one of her several initiatives: The Iowa Latino Hall of Fame. This summer offered me a great opportunity to learn a bit more about the inner workings of our state government. It should be known and announced that the Human Rights Department of Iowa is filled with people who care deeply for the community. Being around them pushed me to use skills in reference to professional communication and organization while discovering what it takes to selflessly serve.”
