Dear Friends,
It is with great pride that I write this end of year USLS letter to our intersecting communities on campus and throughout Iowa.
The US Latino/a Studies Program is engaging renovation and innovation. We welcomed two exciting speakers who brought together over 500 students, staff, faculty and community members combined. In the Fall, Professor and Sociologist, Ginetta Candelario gave a thought provoking talk, “Back to the Future: The Social Justice Origins and Future of Latinx Studies.” In the Spring, New York Times Correspondent in LA, Walter Thompson Hernandez, presented his timely work about Blaxicans in LA. Students joined them for informal lunch conversations that underscored the diversity and intellectual caliber of the ISU community.
USLS students volunteered for several local Latinx collaborations such as MAIZE and the Latino/a Festival in Des Moines.
KHOI featured US Latino/a Studies.
The program now offers internships connected to Extension and Outreach, 4H, and the Office of Latino Affairs in Des Moines, and scholarships to make these internships a reality for our USLS student minors.
Finally, we are making new connections through cross listed, and new, class offerings.
