“I chose the USLS minor because I had taken 211 as a diversity credit and loved the course content. I also realized that it would be a good match for my major, which is Spanish. The coursework complemented the coursework for my major, and that helped to enhance my learning. I would love to work with refugees and immigrants, specifically Latinos, in the future, and this minor has been a great opportunity for me to learn more about the history and current predicaments of Latinos in the U.S. It has allowed me to gain experience working at a non-profit through an internship as well as connect with immigrant students in Perry through coursework. My favorite USLS class was 325. It’s all about Latino immigrants in Iowa and has a service component that goes along with it. It was really interesting to learn about the history of Latino immigration in the Midwest. I especially loved that the course was discussion based because that opened up a lot of interesting and fruitful conversations.”
